One of three prime accused in Rewari gang rape case arrested, two still on the run

The Haryana Police, on Sunday, arrested one of the three prime accused Nishu in connection with the gang rape of a 19-year-old CBSE topper in Rewari.

The three accused, Pankaj, Nishu and Manish, were known to the victim as they belonged to the same village.

The police also arrested two other men in connection with the gang rape. The two other men arrested are Dr Sanjeev, who first attended to the woman following the crime, and Deen Dayal on whose property she was allegedly raped.

The 19-year-old CBSE topper, who was also felicitated by the President for her achievements in academics, was kidnapped while she was on her way to a coaching class. She was taken to a room adjoining a tubewell in a field, drugged and gangraped.

Haryana Police is conducting raids across several states to nab the other two accused who are still on the run.

During a press conference on Sunday, Nazneen Bhasin, Superintendent of Police (Nuh), said that the whole incident was planned. Bhasin told the media the doctor was aware that three men had held a girl captive and he did not inform the authorities.

Bhasin also said that Deen Dayal, who owned the room where the girl was raped, knew about the rape.

“Deen Dayal is owner of the tube-well. It has been proved that he knew the purpose the place was going to be used for. On the basis of mobile forensics, it’s been proved that Nishu contacted him to inform that they need a room. It was all pre-planned,” Bhasin said.

Meanwhile, Rewari’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Duggal was also transferred. He was accused of failing to ensure prompt action in the case.

Rahul Sharma replaced Duggal as the SP of Rewari.

Haryana DGP BS Sandhu told news agency ANI that Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar had called him. Sandhu said that he briefed the CM about the incident and the investigation. He also mentioned that Rajesh Duggal was being transferred due to his “inaction”.

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar termed the incident as unfortunate and assured that the accused will be arrested soon.

Speaking before the Haryana Police nabbed one of the prime accused, Khattar said, “Three accused have been identified. It’s unfortunate they (accused-victim) knew each other. It’s even more unfortunate that one accused is an Army personnel. Search is underway. We’ve announced reward of Rs 1 Lakh on their head. They’ll be nabbed soon.”

The Haryana Police also revealed that the main accused in the Rewari gang rape is an Army man serving in Rajasthan.

“Main accused is a serving defence personnel stationed in Rajasthan. We are getting a warrant against him,” Director General of Police (DGP) BS Sandhu said in a statement on Saturday. He said efforts are also on to arrest the other two accused in the case.

The victim is currently stable. She complained of pain in her lower abdomen and legs and is undergoing treatment in the civil hospital in Rewari. The victim’s family rejected the Haryana government’s proposal to transfer her to Medanta Hospital in Delhi.
