The Delhi Police filed a lengthy chargesheet today against ten people, including student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, in a sedition case.

Lengthy, because it took a trunk for the officers to carry the chargesheet — estimated to be around 1200-page long — inside the premises of the Patiala House Court in New Delhi.

The visuals of the trunk being carried were tweeted by ANI.

The sedition case that dates back to February, 2016 involved use of anti-national slogans by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students.

Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested that year for allegedly organising an event inside the JNU campus against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru. There was outrage when allegations were made that anti-national slogans had been raised.

The opposition slammed the police for “working at the behest of the ruling BJP”.

A special cell of the Delhi Police has been investigating the case.

The arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, a former president of the JNU Students’ Union, catapulted him to national fame and resulted in country-wide protests.
