With Aamir Khan’s previous release, Dangal, currently holding the record for the highest-grossing Indian film ever, the stakes were high for Thugs Of Hindostan. However, the film had a bumper opening at the box office, earning Rs 52 crore, including the Tamil and Telugu-dubbed versions. The Hindi version alone has made Rs 50.75 crore.
On its second day, Thugs Of Hindostan continued its glorious run, despite being unanimously panned by critics. According to early estimates, the action-adventure film, which also features Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles, raked in around Rs 35 crore.
Thugs Of Hindostan released across a whopping 7000 screens worldwide, and its ticket prices also witnessed a hike of at least ten per cent. Reportedly, the prices in multiplexes ranged from Rs 400 to Rs 1,500, while the average price in single screens went up to Rs 200.
Aamir told PTI that he understands the producer’s decision, he personally believes that tickets should be affordable. “I can understand. It is an expensive film. Personally, I am always for tickets to be cheaper. I think we should have theatres that are economical and people should go and watch the film in theatre.”
In a massive blow to the makers of Thugs Of Hindostan, the entire film was leaked online by the piracy website TamilRockers. This is expected to make a huge dent in the collection of the film in the coming days.
Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Thugs Of Hindostan revolves around the “thugs” led by the fierce Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan), who pose a threat to the John Clive-led East India Company in 1795 Hindostan. The British recruit Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan) to infiltrate the band of rebels and get them the leader of the thugs.
Thugs Of Hindostan, which has Aamir and Amitabh sharing screen space for the first time, was one of the most anticipated films of 2018 but it turned out to be a damp squib, if the reviews are anything to go by.
However, with three weeks to go for the next big release, Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar-starrer 2.0, Thugs Of Hindostan could continue to enjoy a glorious run at the box office.
