  • The strike was carried out days after the Uri attack that killed 20 Indian soldiers
  • DS Hooda said the strike was needed to send a strong message to Pakistan

Lt Gen (retired) DS Hooda, who was the chief of the Northern Command of the Army in September 2016 during the surgical strike, said that it has been politicised and overhyped in India.

“I do think the surgical strike was overhyped and politicised…but from the military point of view, the strike was much needed,” said Hooda while speaking to ANI.

The Indian Army had announced on September 29, 2016 that it had carried out the cross-border strike, days after Uri attack.

“We had lost so many soldiers in Uri. It was important to send a strong message to Pakistan. We wanted to tell Pakistan that if they come to our side and carry out such strikes [Uri attack], then we can also go to their area and carry out bigger and better strikes,” said Hooda.

In a pre-dawn attack on September 18, 2016, Pakistan-based terrorists entered the Army headquarters in Uri killing as many as 20 Indian soldiers before being eliminated.

As public outrage in India grew, the cross-border strike was cleared by Prime Minister Modi. The then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, NSA Ajit Doval, then Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag and Northern Army Commander DS Hooda in consultation with other security agencies planned out this covert strike.

India had planned for about 10 days before launching commandos across the border.

“I was clear that the Uri attack had to be avenged and answered in equal measure”, General Suhag had told India Today earlier.

Videos of the strike across the LoC were made public this year in September, a couple of days before the second anniversary of the strike.

General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of the Army Staff, has time and again warned Pakistan and said that India needs to launch another surgical strike against terrorists.
