09:33 IST: 79.1: Y Ahmadzai to Ashwin, A length ball on off, reversing in to the right-hander, Ashwin chips it without much control and just gets it past mid on. Asghar Stanikzai rushes to his right and tries to slide and throw in one motion but slips. However, the batsmen take only a single.

Batsman Hardik Pandya11(23b 1*4 0*6)
Bowler Rashid Khan 27-2-122-1

09:31 IST: 78.5: R Khan to Ashwin, A long hop, punched through the covers for a single.
09:31 IST: 78.4: R Khan to Ashwin, A touch shorter around off, defended back to the bowler.
09:31 IST: 78.3: R Khan to Ashwin, Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
09:30 IST: 78.2: R Khan to Ashwin, What a ripper. This is landed outside off, Ashwin plays inside the line of that one and is beaten. Zazai fumbles but there was no edge on that.
09:30 IST: 78.1: R Khan to Pandya, The scoreboard gets moving straightaway. A full ball on the pads, Hardik flicks it through mid-wicket for a single.
09:28 IST: Out come the players on the field. Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin are the overnight batsmen. It will be Rashid Khan to start off proceedings to Pandya. Here we go…
09:24 IST: Where is that quote unquote I had mentioned some time ago? ‘Best I have ever seen in a while’, is it? It was bright and sunny until 5 minutes back. All of a sudden we have got visitors. It is time we start getting visitor ids for the clouds as well. It is now getting overcast quickly…
09:13 IST: PITCH REPORT – Sunil Gavaskar and Simon Doull doing the observation say that the grass is still there on the pitch. That will hold the cracks together which will help batting. But, there is some cloud cover around and some moisture, which means there will be some assistance for the bowlers as well.
09:09 IST: Murali Vijay is giving an interview to Simon Doull. The opener says he was mentally prepared for the game. Adds further that he tried to stick to his basics, spend more time in the middle and it went well for him. On Afghanistan’s bowling, Vijay feels that they were bowling better to the right-handers and hence he took his time. He mentions he is generally not nervous when he is in the 90s and tries to enjoy the moment. Reckons that once the ball got older it started to turn a lot more and ends by saying he feels good after the ton he scored.
09:07 IST: Before we proceed further, warm wishes to all of those celebrating Ramadan. A big weekend is coming up ahead and hopefully, you folks have a great time. Amen!
09:06 IST: WEATHER REPORT – Most of the times, the ones above decide the fate of the ones below. Bright and sunny skies yesterday helped India while an overcast evening helped the Afghans. As of now, it is bright and sunny. Quote unquote my colleague Baba who is at the ground – ‘Weather is pleasant, in fact the best I have seen in a while.’ Well, it will be nice to have an uninterrupted game.
09:02 IST: A hard-fought day it was. Afghanistan started cautiously, only to be thwarted into submission by a rampant Shikhar Dhawan. It looked like all India around Tea when the skies changed their mood and accordingly, fortunes changed. 347/6 looks a very good total by the batting side on Day 1 of a Test – but to recover from a mauling of 280/1 will give a huge boost to the fielding side. Who will momentum favour this morning? The answer will be clearer in a few minutes’ time. Hello and a warm welcome to the second day of the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan in Bengaluru.
18:15 IST: That ends proceedings on the opening day! Who was the better side? Was it the one which started well or the one which ended in a terrific manner? Momentum will say Afghanistan but India are in a great position. They will be confident with this score and aim to bowl well on this track which suddenly has got something for the bowlers. Weather will be the key though. Join us for all the action on Day 2 at 0930 local (0400 GMT) to see how the game turns and develops. Before that, you can catch all the action from the exciting second Test between Windies and Sri Lanka. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
18:12 IST: Shikhar Dhawan is having a chat with Simon Doull. The Indian opener says that it feels great to score a century in one session and did not know that he was the first Indian to score a century on Day 1 of a Test before Lunch. On being asked further, he smiles and says that when one can score a century in T20 cricket, why not in one session? Being a bit more serious, he says that he first focussed on the singles and twos and when he got in, started to play his shots. Further says that the main aim for him was to test his fitness. On his dismissal, he says that is not that disappointed as he reckons that it is better getting out playing a shot rather than off a defensive one. On the game situation, he says that 400 will be a very good score on this wicket and India will aim to reach that mark tomorrow and then pick up some wickets of the opposition.
18:11 IST: From a position of dominance at 280/1, India slipped to 334/6 and the Afghans had come roaring back. Yamin Ahmadzai picked up 2 wickets overall but it was the spin of Rashid and Mujeeb which was causing problems for the Indian batters. After hammering the spinners for a major part of the day, they struggled to pick them in the final session. The rain certainly helped the Afghans more than the Indians.
18:06 IST: The first half entirely belonged to India. Dhawan attacked the bowlers mercilessly and was assisted well by Murali Vijay. The duo scored centuries which was followed by a half century from Lokesh Rahul. But, then came the rain which proved to be of gain for the Afghans.
18:05 IST: A poor start but a magnificent finish. Nerves might have got the better of the debutants for most of the day but while heading back to the dressing room, it will be the Afghans who will be smiling a bit more than the Indians. Kudos to their effort and spirit, especially in this final session.
Batsman Ravichandran Ashwin7(16b 1*4 0*6)
Bowler Wafadar 15-4-53-1
18:02 IST: 77.6: Wafadar to Ashwin, Another in-dipper, from outside off, Ashwin looks to flick but misses and is hit on the pads. Wafadar appeals for LBW but quickly realizes that an inside edge is involved. STUMPS ON DAY 1!
18:01 IST: 77.5: Wafadar to R Ashwin, EDGED, SHORT! Outside off, coming in, Ashwin pushes at it meekly and gets a thick outside edge. It does not quite carry to Mohammad Nabi at first slip who dives to his right to stop it.
18:00 IST: 77.4: Wafadar to Ashwin, Outside off, punched straight to point.
17:59 IST: 77.3: Wafadar to Ashwin, Excellent yorker around off, blocked to the leg side.
17:58 IST: 77.2: Wafadar to Ashwin, Around off, defended watchfully. Hardik wants a run and is halfway down the track but is sent back. Makes it back safely. Don’t think there was a run in that.
17:58 IST: 77.1: Wafadar to Ashwin, FOUR! LOVELY! Welcome back into the attack! On a length outside off, Ashwin drives it through the covers and gets a boundary! The stand moves to 13 now.
17:57 IST: Wafadar to bowl now. Probably the last over of the day…
Batsman Ravichandran Ashwin3(10b 0*4 0*6)
Bowler Rashid Khan 26-2-120-1
17:56 IST: 76.6: R Khan to Ashwin, WAS THERE AN EDGE? Probably not. Around off, spinning in, Ashwin looks to defend but the ball goes off the pads. ‘CATCH IT!’ is the call but the ball lobs over short leg. The batsmen take a single but leg bye is the signal.
17:56 IST: 76.5: R Khan to Ashwin, Outside off, left alone.
17:55 IST: 76.4: R Khan to Ashwin, Landed outside off, Ashwin pushes at it tamely but the ball goes off the outside edge through the vacant slip cordon past backward point. Two runs taken.
17:54 IST: 76.3: R Khan to R Ashwin, Full and outside off, driven through the covers for a single.
17:54 IST: 76.2: R Khan to Ashwin, Landed outside off, Ashwin pushes forward but the ball whizzes past the outside edge. Clearly he was expect the googly but was foxed by the leg spinner.
17:53 IST: 76.1: R Khan to Ashwin, Full and outside off, pushed towards cover.
Batsman Ravichandran Ashwin1(4b 0*4 0*6)
Bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman 14-1-69-1
17:53 IST: 75.6: Ur Rahman to Ashwin, Clips it through mid-wicket for a run.
17:52 IST: 75.5: Ur Rahman to Ashwin, Played through mid-wicket by the batsman.
17:52 IST: 75.4: Ur Rahman to Ashwin, The batsman has punched that ball through the off side.
17:51 IST: 75.3: Ur Rahman to Pandya, Comes down the track and eases it to long on for a single.
17:51 IST: 75.2: Ur Rahman to Pandya, FOUR! On middle and leg, flicked through square leg for a lovely boundary.
17:50 IST: 75.1: Ur Rahman to Pandya, Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
Batsman Ravichandran Ashwin0(1b 0*4 0*6)
Bowler Rashid Khan 25-2-118-1
17:50 IST: 74.6: R Khan to Ashwin, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
17:49 IST: Ravichandran Ashwin walks in at number 8, replacing Karthik.
17:49 IST: 74.5: R Khan to Karthik, OUT! Karthik has dived in but his bat is in the air! That is really unfortunate for the wicketkeeper batsman. Outside off, Karthik defends it towards cover and sets off for a run. He thinks he can get it past that man running to his right from point – substitute Nasir Jamal – but Hardik Pandya thinks otherwise. He is not the least bit interested and Karthik, who has come halfway down the track, has to apply brakes and then turn around. He does that and almost makes it to the crease with a dive. The throw is a weak one from Jamal and it goes on the bounce as he is off balance. But replays show that when Afsar Zazai breaks the stumps, Karthik’s bat is in the crease but not grounded! The reason for that is that when the bat first made contact with the ground outside the crease, the force and impact made it pop up. That is a real sad piece of luck for Karthik on return. Afghanistan have 6 wickets in one day and we have another 10 minutes to go!
17:47 IST: Is Karthik run out? He has put in a dive but replays will make it clearer…
17:46 IST: 74.4: R Khan to Pandya, Around off, worked through mid-wicket for a run.
17:45 IST: 74.3: R Khan to Pandya, Played to the point region by the batsman.
17:45 IST: 74.2: R Khan to Karthik, Outside off, pushed through point for a single.
