Downright embarrassing: Indian cricket fans fume after Lord’s disaster

Indian batsmen put another dismal performance at the Lord’s as the visitors were trounced by an innings and 159 runs by England in the second Test on Sunday. The hosts also took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series with the victory.

It was an absolute no-show from the famed batting line-up of the Indian cricket team as they scored just 237 runs in the two innings combined, in comparison to England’s 396 runs in just one innings.

While all-rounder Chris Woakes and Johnny Bairstow stood up for England when they were in trouble, none of the Indian batsmen managed to get their application right on a dodgy wicket in tough conditions as James Anderson and Stuart Broad wrecked havoc.

Ravichandran Ashwin was India’s top scorer in both the innings at Lord’s with scores of 29 and 33 not out and that says a great deal about how the batsmen have been doing in English conditions.

It was a humiliation for India to say the least and Twitter did not spare the Indian batsmen, who had gone to England at the back some big performances and tall words.

Indian fans called the defeat “embarrassing” and an “absolute surrender”. People compared it to the horrendous England tour of 2011 and ridiculed the excuses that have been given every time India fail in England.

While it was a dismal batting performance from India, Virat Kohli still showed a bit of resistance even with a stiff back. Kohli, who played for 57 minutes on Sunday before falling to Broad on 17 received the sympathies of Twitter users for carrying this team forward.

While Kohli was criticised for his captaincy and on-field decision, some chose to defend him and questioned who else will captain India if not Kohli.
